David Cameron's cuts for parents

Victoria & family

“David Cameron would cut support for families under real pressure because of this recession and who need to defer interest payments so they don’t lose their homes.”

The Labour Government has introduced a package of support for mortgage holders to help them avoid losing their home if they suffer a temporary loss of income in this global recession.

These are:

•    The mortgage rescue scheme – allowing housing associations to step in and help people who are at risk of seeing their homes repossessed if the individuals meet a defined set of criteria;

•    Support for mortgage interest – the Government has expanded this scheme by reducing the period qualifying people have to wait to access support, which comes in the form of help with mortgage interest payments;

•    The homeowner mortgage support scheme – allows people who are faced with a temporary fall in income to defer a proportion of their interest payment for up to two years while they get their finances back on track.

These measures to help mortgage-owners are part of the Government’s plan for recovery – a plan repeatedly opposed by the Conservatives. By repeatedly opposing the action taken in the pre-Budget report in Autumn 2008 and the Budget in 2009, the Conservatives have set themselves against the targeted investment to help mortgage owners.

“I mean to be fair though for the last couple of years I have been saying don’t cut VAT, don’t have a fiscal stimulus, we’ve got to focus on the debt, we can’t afford all this spending and all this borrowing.”
David Cameron, speaking on ITV’s “This Morning” on 24 April 2009

“But should we embark on an immediate and large-scale exercise in additional borrowing - adding permanently to our national debt? My answer is that we should not.”
David Cameron, speaking at the St Stephen’s Club in Westminster on 18 November 2008
